Ironside, OR to John Day, OR
69 miles

Oregon threw everything it had at us today. Headwinds started early in
the morning. Three passes were between us and John Day. The weather
was chilly for this time of the season. To get to the destination,
nearly 70 miles had to be ridden. Despite that, we overcame the odds.

As we headed up the first pass called Blue Mountain Summit, a bicycle
race was being held on the same road. The riders were riding in the
opposite direction and the race was called The Elkhorn Classic. It was
pretty cool to see pro's whizzing by at 30mph as we rolled by at 5mph.
We cheered them on as they also cheered for us.

We also crossed into the Pacific Time Zone today. Just another sign of
our progress towards Alaska.

Glenn found a GPS unit on the ground the other day. The address of he
owner is programmed in and asked to return if found. Since we have to
pay out our own pocket to send it back, I figure it's fair if we use it
to Alaska then return it.

We rolled into John Day and we were starving for something real good.
The first thing we saw was Dirty Shame Saloon and Pizzeria. We headed
straight for it. We ordered a pitcher of beer and a large cheese.

As we were leaving, curious diners werw asking what we were doing. We
told them where we started and who we were riding for. 20 minutes
later, we had a motel, dinner and drinks handed to us. As it turns out, I
was talking to the girlfriend of owner. Chris and Vern Fisher helped
us out tremendously. Deena and Sahyla, I hope I spelled that right,
bought us a motel room at The Little Pine Inn.
Vern hooked us up with chicken, salad and drinks.

I know I keep saying we have met some super generous people but I can't
believe we met so many in almost every town. It's as if someone is
watching over us.

Thanks to all in John Day.
