Condon, OR to The Dalles, OR
72 miles

We said we would make it to Washington and we did, for about 5 minutes.
The bridge that took us over the Columbia River was at the Biggs
Junction. The tractor trailer traffic was unbelievable. That should have
been a sign to take an alternate route. Of course we didn't listen to
our instincts because we're men.

We crossed the bridge and that led straight to a 3 mile climb. This
road was way too tight with no shoulders. About a 100 yards up the
climb, a truck came barreling down the hill while another was speeding up.
The two trucks and us crossed at the same time around a tight turn.
Not gonna happen. The truck came to a hault after he realized he was
about to crush us. We fell over on the guard rail. We decided this was
enough. We headed back to Oregon and took Interstate 84 instead.

Anyway, we got to see something pretty cool today. There was a
construction crew putting up wind turbines and we had to stop so they could
get a monster crane across the road. The towers on the wind turbines are
400 ft tall and the blades have a diameter on 250 feet. It can
generate electricity with winds as low as 3mph. The blades are made of
carbon fiber and fiberglass composite.

The crew estimates they have work booked up for next 20 years. Future
of renewable energy is looking good here.

We also got to see a glimpse of Mount Hood today although we couldn't
see the top because of cloud cover. We know we're getting close to the
coast.

We rolled into Dalles after a jittery experience on the interstate and
we ended up at an RV park. That is where we met Lee and Steve Lawde.
They offered us a great camp ground as well as a fabulous dinner. After
some terrific conversation, Steve offered us two great bottles of wine
and words of wisdom. Thanks guys for making us feel very welcome.

We'll try for Washington on more time.

Good night.

P.S. We had headwinds again, what a surprise.

1 mile at a time...
